Using Install New Release

Net•Yield uses a system of periodic updates to provide its users with the most current features and improvements to the system. The downloaded files will contain changes to the Net•Yield program files and any of the other Net•Yield utility programs. The update file types are .zip and may contain changes to the NY_6XXXX.exe, NetPrint.exe, NetBrow.exe, NetYield.chm and/or NetLabel.exe programs.

To install and update the software:

Confirm that no users are logged into Net•Yield by going to the Concurrent Users option in the User Menu. If users are logged into the system, they must log out or you will not be able to install the software updates.

Unzip the contents of the files to the C:\Program Files\NetYield folder of the administrator's computer. This will place the new Net•Yield utility programs and the NY_R6XXXX.exe update file in the proper folder ("XXXX" indicates the version and release number).

Log into Net•Yield using a user login name that has full administration rights to the system. See User Security.

Select the Install New Releases option from the System menu. The update file with a name similar to "NY_R6XXXX.exe" will appear. Select the file and press enter. The following message will display: "You must exit NetYield for update to (latest release number) to take effect!", indicating that you must restart Net•Yield for the changes to take effect. Select OK and exit NetYield.

Click on the Net•Yield icon. A message box will appear: “Update server software from your client?” The file name, date, and your local client folder path for the new file to be copied along with the shared data distribution folder data path will come into view. Select Yes to copy the new version of the file to the shared data path so it can be automatically distributed to the other network users. Do this for each new file found.

The message line will then display as follows: "Backup Databases before Upgrade No/Yes". It is strongly recommended that you select Yes so in the event an upgrade fails, the databases can be restored from the backup to try again. The message “Backup filename” will appear. Once the backup is completed, another message line will appear: "Upgrading from (old release number) to (new release number). Checking for exclusive use of all files. Please wait...” If the system cannot open a file exclusively, an error message box will appear stating “Upgrade terminated, trying to upgrade from (old release number) to (new release number). Unable to obtain exclusive access to filename.” Confirm that no one is logged into Net•Yield and that there are no open sessions or files on your server or terminal server. Contact your network administrator for information on how to check whether there are open sessions or files on your network.

As the system is upgrading to the latest release, a message line will appear indicating the progress of the upgrade: “Checking files, XX% complete, Please wait...” followed by “Checking structures, XX% complete, Please wait...” indicates that the database files are being updated to the new release. Once the upgrade is complete, you will be prompted to log back into NetYield.

To update other workstations on the network:

As each user logs into Net•Yield, any new versions of the software or the Net•Yield utility programs will be automatically downloaded to their workstation from the shared data folder. The user will be notified as each file is downloaded. Users do not have to do anything except wait for the downloads to finish before entering Net•Yield.

Note: Net•Yield will automatically "distribute" several different types of its files: Updates (.exe), Help Files (.chm), and NetPrint files (.nyp), among others.
